A beautiful large hardwood evergreen tree native to the coast range and Sierra foothills of California and up into Oregon. Also known as Oregon Myrtle or Pepperwood, it can reach heights of 100' tall and almost as wide in favored locations. The fragrant leaves are similar though stronger than the Bay Laurel of the Mediterranean, and can be used the same way in lighter amounts. The nuts are also edible and are roasted to make excellent confections, or leached like acorns to make a meal. The natives considered the tree to ward off evil spirits, and a few leaves put under ones hat, one in the nostril, or soaking the head with a wash infused with the leaves is known for curing headaches. The wood is very hard and esteemed for making bowls, guitars, carving and many other uses. Pretty yellow flowers bloom very early in the spring..
