Franquette Walnut Scionwood

Print
This old French variety was discovered in the early 1800's and was the most widely planted walnut throughout the northwest and California for many years. Very late to leaf out it rarely gets burned by late frosts. Medium size nuts are thin shelled and tightly sealed, making them resistant to coddling moth and blight, and have very good flavor. Partially self fertile trees are moderate bearers and produce heavier crops with another variety such as Hartley or Chandler as a pollinator. It also is a good pollinator for other varieties such as Hartley and Chandler, increasing their production. Trees can grow large and tall. Hardy zones 6-10.
