Known as Handama, Suizenjigusa and Okinawa Spinach in Japan, it is also called Cholesterol Spinach for its reported ability to help lower blood cholesterol levels. Native to Indonesia, it is also grown commercially in China.A very easy to grow tropical or subtropical green it forms a dense ground cover choking out weeds and growing up to 28" high. Tender to frost it can be grown outdoors in warm winter climates, but is also great grown in containers that can be brought inside in the winter, or makes an excellent greenhouse plant. A member of the chrysanthemum family Okinawa spinach has a crisp nutty taste and can be eaten raw or cooked. Traditionally used in Tempura, stirfries, soups, stews and salads. A very heat tolerant plant that makes a great ornamental with its lush green and pink undersides leaves, as well as an abundant year round food.
